September iPod Event Predictions

As August nears its end, and September approaches, a few thoughts pop into peoples heads. For some it may be the end of summer, for others the beginning of school. However, for most of the people reading this site, new iPods is the reaction. Undoubtably we will see updates next month: but what exactly will come? Here are my predictions…

1. iPod Shuffle: At 49 dollars, its hard to imagine the price dropping anymore. However, I’m sure we will see some sort of an updated design, definitely thinner, and while a screen is possible, its unlikely. More space, and thinner are what to expect here.

Jonas Brothers at Apple Soho is a Major No-No

See here. The musical geniuses who brought you such timeless classics as S.O.S. and Burnin’ Up performed today at the Apple SoHo. Meanwhile, hundreds of teenage girls (and apparently one guy), who think its crazy to wait in line all day for a phone, waited all day in line to listen to a horrible, direct-from-Disney group sound even worse in person (if that is even possible). Due to the popularity of the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and High School Musical, I have come to the conclusion that teenage girls have it hard-coded in their DNA to have no taste in music. If you’ve looked at the iTunes Top 10 lately, you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about: there currently are two Jonas Brothers songs, a Demi Lovato song, a Miley Cyrus song, and now, a David Archuleta song.

Europe Going iPhone…Soon.

Europe iphone

With Apple set to announce it’s European iPhone strategy later this week, a lot of questions still remain on the specifics of the deal.  What we know:

  • The carriers will be O2 in the UK, Tmobile in Germany, and Orange in France.  Spain’s Telefonica might also pick up the device because of the O2 relationship.
  • Even with the rampant SIM hacking, the devices will be locked to the carriers initially.  Different Laws in Europe REQUIRE that device manufacturers open up their devices after 6 months of use.  This might not be a huge issue as the phones are likely to be sold with 2 year plans.
  • Apple’s UK announcement will likely open the iPod Touch floodgates as the employees have been asked to stay late the day of the announcement.

What we’d like to know:

iPod, Meet the Beatles

Beatles on ipod

This week brought news that John Lennon’s entire discography will now be on iTunes, DRM free at $1.29/track.  This is very likely the latest clue in the next big announcement from Apple.

John Lennon Solo Catalog Debuts on iTunes Store
Apple today announced the debut of the John Lennon solo catalog on the iTunes Store. Sixteen of Lennon

Beatles iTunes rumors to continue for some time to come..

According to Paul McCartney, who is obviously not too tied up with this stuff, the Beatles aren’t yet close to showing up on the iTunes Music Store.  That being said, he acknowledged that there were indeed negotiations between Apple Corps/EMI and Apple, Inc.  And they are continuing.  Sort of.  He’s not too bothered:

"We’d like to do it," McCartney was quoted as telling the BBC on its website on Tuesday. "We are very for it, we’ve been pushing it. But there are a couple of sticking points, I understand.

"Last word I got back was it’s stalled at the moment," McCartney added. "But I really hope it will happen because I think it should."

"It's only Rock and Roll" show wrapup

Shows over, some will be happy, others will have had higher expectations*.

The biggest expectations were for the iPod touch.  Those who hoped for a camera were probably unhappy at the results today.  The iPod touch got a faster, double memory for the price sized 64GB and 32GB version and the 8GB version got dropped to $199 from $229.  No camera or anything else it appears.  This lends credence to the HardMac reports of delays.  We’re not telling you what to do, but you might want to wait a few months on any iPod Touch purchases.

The iPod Shuffle got colors and some headphones compatibility.

The Classic got a bump in size to 160GB.  No camera.

The Nano got the most improvements with that camera that was expected.  Video, stills, a mic, and some new apps like Voicenotes and Pedometer. Also an FM radio (at last)  Very nice additions for Nano customers.

iTunes 9 got an overhaul which was nice and expected.  iTunes LP (Cocktail) we’re looking forward to playing with, though not with the Beatles.  We’re downloading iTunes now.  It is here.

iPhone OS 3.1 hit with Genius lists and other minor improvements.  DO NOT UPGRADE if you enjoy free tethering.

A lot of sales figures and game demos also went by.  We’re excited for EA’s Sporting games (Madden!).

Although this wasn’t a spectacular show, it was good to see Steve Jobs back after all.

Everyone cheered, we think if the internet was wired for sound we’d have heard cheering from all over the place.

Apple slashes previous-gen iPod prices as new models prepare to launch

As the world grows ever more curious at what Apple will reveal at its keynote event today, and commentators ponder a Sky News report in which Yoko Ono said music from The Beatles will indeed make it to iTunes, Apple has quietly applied price cuts across its existing iPod touch range.

The price cuts – presumably to offload existing stocks of older models to make way for the new – also lend some weight to claims Apple will introduce an iPod touch at a new low price, perhaps $149 (you can now buy a refurb 2nd Gen iPod Touch for exactly $149).

Yoko Ono blows it again. Whole Beatles catalog to be available on iTunes – Sky News

We’ll believe it when we see it but  late comments by John Lennon’s Heiress seems to indicate that the whole Beatles back catalog will be showing up on iTunes…perhaps at tomorrow’s event.

Update: The Sky News link is down but here’s some twitterin’ evidence below.

Update 2: A Sky News employee has told us they were told to cut the story out immediately and not to comment.  Directive came "from the very top".  Here’s a Google Cache of the story if there are any unbelievers…This is getting interesting!

Update 3: Google’s News cache is gone but it is still in the general cache.  The whole thing is kinda Twilight Zone at this point.  In the other corner we have EMI’s chief saying it ain’t going down… "tomorrow".

Shouldn’t Sky News be issuing a retraction – or something at this point?  Isn’t that what normal News news orgs do if they run a story and then pull it?  This is very very weird.  Has something like this ever happened before?

Apple springs iPod with camera cases leak

Two separate iPod case makers today effectively confirmed Apple’s next-gen iPods will carry cameras, reinforcing months of expectation of the same.

UK case manufacturer Proporta has distributed a press release offering cases for the as-yet unannounced iPod nano. The manufacturer hasn’t yet released any images of the new range, presumably being under an NDA of some kind with Apple Inc. – but has confirmed the new models will feature cameras, or at the least it believes they will.

“The new Apple 5G iPod nano looks set to be a typically beautiful new product from the Apple stable, building on the already impressive 4G nano by adding a camera and improving the size of the screen,” the company said, announcing its new range.

The new products include an Aluminium Lined Leather Case and the Ted Baker Leather Case.

Another European manufacturer, Hama, is also showing cases for the next generation of Apple iPods, including for the iPod nano and iPod touch, Engadget reports.

UPDATED: September 9th is official: "It's only rock and roll, but we like it"

It may not be a Beatles line or a Hendrix line (it’s a Stones line) but the September 9th event is now official.  Apple sent invites out to the tech journalist community today. The event will again be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco at 10AM PST.

UPDATE: In keeping with previous years, Apple this morning confirmed there will be a simultaneous European press/industry briefing held in London on the same date, with the keynote presentation streamed via satellite to attendees at the invite-only event.

Remember, 9to5mac will have live coverage (video again hopefully) so come join us for the festivities.  Photo iPods for everyone!

Sony cooking up a Jimi Hendrix Apple iTunes Cocktail?

Alright, time for a little early morning speculation, but it seems to us the music business is preparing a range of tasty treats designed to fit like lovely snugly gloves around Apple’s rumoured Cocktail music format and the industry’s attempt at the same, CMX.

We know the Beatles have a box set coming through soon (which is picking up lots of pre-release positive murmurings on music industry networks), and we think that release could easily lend itself to Cocktail. Maybe. (We do look forward to testing speculation on or around September 9).

Beatles: "Discussions regarding digital distribution will continue"

The Beatles may be the most successful band in history and may have captured and inspired the minds of a generation, but when it comes to the online music world, they remain a few steps away from “Revolution Number 9”, or so it appears.

The long-running rumour that music from the band may eventually make it to iTunes has a long and storied history. It is part of the regular hubbub of chatter which pops up from time-to-time. It seems to have a life of its own.

Will The Beatles be part of the September 9th event?

So speculation this morning is buzzing as claims are made Apple plans a special music-focused event on September 9 – and yet again there is some some small coincidences to suggest The Beatles could be part of this all-new music product launch.  (Yes, this rumour yet again)

We know to expect new iPods, with the iPod touch and nano possibly equipped with cameras. We also know to expect a new and more socially-connected iteration of iTunes; we hope for some news on the Apple TV and you’ll note tablet speculation has gone down a notch or two on the news that product won’t be showing its face next week.

But the Beatles may well be: think this through. Apple’s event is on September 9 – we’re not sure where at this point, but we do note the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is open for business on that date – and, mysteriously for Apple’s most beloved local hall – has nothing scheduled for September 9.

Did we mention the Beatles? Well, apart from remaining digital music’s chief stand-outs and presumably the most file-shared musical ouvre on the planet, the band has a game coming out next month. Rock Band. When’s it ship? September 9. Is there a connection forming here?

UPDATED: EA confirms Rock Band for iPhone – pics

EA Mobile has confirmed a version of its extremely popular Rock Band game for the iPhone and iPod touch. The news first emerged during an Electronic Arts presentation at the CTIA mobile trade show yesterday. Just like its console siblings, the iPhone version will offer downloadable tracks, alongside Bluetooth multi-player features designed to support up to four players.

TechCrunch informs that on the iPhone game play seems set to reflect that of its console kin, the notes flow down the fretboard in the same way, with guitar pick-shaped buttons presumably there to play notes.

The Beatles come to iTunes (not really)

Excuse the misleading headline, we’re just deadly bored waiting for the survivors of the popular 60’s beat combo to get their digital deal done with iTunes,

While they wait, fans can entertain themselves with Beatles Walk London iPhone App. The fact-packed guide takes in 16 key Beatles London locations and many extra smaller sites in an easy to follow walk from St. John’s Wood to Piccadilly Circus.

“Follow in the footsteps of The Fab Four as you visit the Abbey Road zebra crossing, the Marylebone station movie location for A Hard Day’s Night and the site of what would be the group’s extraordinary, final, live public performance on the rooftop at Savile Row.”
