Skype app updated for iOS 8, includes interactive notifications for calls and messages

The Skype app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch has now been updated with support for iOS 8. Unfortunately, this does not include support for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus screen sizes, meaning Skype still renders at a scaled iPhone 5s resolution.

However, the update does add interactive notifications which helps streamline responding to content. Hence, new Skype notifications have buttons attached to the alert which can perform various actions. For voice calls, you can answer or decline. For video calls, you can choose between voice or video responses. For missed calls, you can respond with a message or call the person straight back.

These buttons appear like any other iOS 8 interactive notification. On the lockscreen, swiping to the left slides the notification sideways to reveal the additional buttons. Similarly, within Notification Center, left swipes reveal the same set of buttons.

When presented as a banner in an app or on the Home Screen, pull down on the notification to reveal the full message body with the actionable buttons below the text.

As always, Skype is free. Hopefully, the company will add native layout for the larger screens of the new iPhones soon.

at the moment Apple doesn’t allow to use TextField in interactive notifications for 3rd-party devs. only Buttons with custom actions. maybe sometimes…

Until they finally get around to adding a text size option, or at least responding to the iOS text size setting , I’m more than happy with the larger text size.

This is the worst Skype app EVER. Wish I could go back to the old version. Aside from the layout being horrible, half the time when I make a video call, people can’t see me, and sometimes can’t hear me either. Seems like Skype has been going downhill since Microsoft got involved.

Really ,,`i thought apple would let the quick reply features as for the imessege…..it doesnt make any sence to add button to reply for skype ,,because even without button and just tap the notification it just opens app anyway….ios 8 without quick reply for messenger services is just useless

  5. Does it still suck battery life out of the phone? Anyone test the power usage on this version?
