Back in October, Apple finally released an updated iMac. It was the first update since 2021, when Apple first transitioned the iMac line to Apple Silicon. The iMac has long been iconic for Apple’s lineup as it was symbolic of Steve Jobs’ return to Apple and the beginning of its current dominance in the marketplace. Without the iMac, there would likely be no iPhone. Although the iMac is considered a “consumer device,” it’s been very popular in business applications because of its self-contained design. That’s why the latest update has been somewhat perplexing to me.

Apple recently published a case study on The University of Kentucky’s Apple deployment, and I believe that it’s worth highlighting. In it, we find “PC-guy” Bill Adams looking at how he crunched the numbers and saw a great return on investment with iPad and Mac for the Wildcats. I believe this trend is a major shift that is happening in IT right now as staffing and total cost of ownership become more important than raw hardware costs.

With Apple’s fall release, we’re seeing Wi-Fi 6E continue to come to Apple’s product line. Outside of the MacBook Air, all of the Macs now have options for Wi-Fi 6E. On the iPhone, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support Wi-Fi 6E. On the iPad, only the iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation) or iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation) support Wi-Fi 6E. Are we at a tipping point where it’s time to start considering Wi-Fi 6E deployments? What about Wi-Fi 7?

Apple @ Work: IDC report highlights how security has become Apple’s trojan horse in the enterprise

Back in early October, IDC published a report about the perception that IT professionals had around various platforms and what keeps them up at night. The last sentence I think is a pretty good way to think about the life of an IT team. It’s, in some ways, about survival. Security threats are everywhere. Systems are always one bad configuration away from going down. It’s about ensuring that the employees you support have what they need to do their jobs. There’s one question in particular that highlights Apple’s position of strength in the enterprise, though.

How important would you say it is to have security built into a computer from the ground up —
including the silicon, the firmware, and the OS — to protect it from today’s, and in anticipation of
tomorrow’s threats?

In macOS Sonoma, Safari gains a new feature called “Add to Dock.” I was way too excited about this feature when it was announced because I know how transformational it can be for macOS deployments in the enterprise (with some help from Apple). Web apps reign supreme for many enterprise tools, and “Add to Dock” is going to make it a lot better.

For Apple IT admins who manage thousands of remote Macs, providing support for end users is not always easy. There can be a lot of variables that you must uncover when issues arise. One of the things I’ve often thought Apple should add is a simple menu bar app that can quickly allow users to copy and paste key data into a support ticket. Thankfully, one company is continuing to provide a solution: Root3’s Support App and version 2.5 recently shipped.

Cellular-enabled Macs have been on tech professionals’ wish lists for as long as cellular speeds have been fast enough to actually be useful for data. Apple sells cellular-enabled iPads and cellular-enabled Apple Watches, and of course all iPhones include cellular data, so why not the Mac? Today, I want to make the case that Apple should offer an option to include a built-in cellular modem in MacBook Pro laptops as a way to differentiate them on the high end of the lineup.
