Device security is at the forefront for any IT department. While many professionals are familiar with how to secure Windows in an enterprise environment, they might not be as up-to-date on how to secure macOS. In this guide, I’ll give some steps to consider, but this isn’t meant to be an exhaustive guide as every industry and company will have different requirements, so consider this information a “starting point.”

The transition to Apple Silicon is fantastic thus far. Having been an Apple user since 2004, this is my second processor change, and this transition is going exceptionally well. My M1 Apple MacBook Air is my favorite Mac of all time. For the enterprise market, Apple Silicon is bringing many beneficial factors, but one of the more underrated ones is iOS apps running on macOS.

Supervision on the macOS, iPadOS, and iOS is one of the most fundamental decisions you can make when planning out your business or K–12 deployments. Unlike most aspects of your Apple deployment, if you mess up on supervised devices on the front end, it’s difficult and time-consuming to recover from after the fact. Let’s dive in on device supervision with Apple and how to leverage it to help your deployment become a successful one.

Apple @ Work: Apple TV has become a popular digital signage tool thanks to MDM integration and comparatively low cost

In the aftermath of Apple’s cancellation of the big HomePod, there’s been a lot of speculation about Apple TV’s future. After releasing the tvOS version of the Apple TV in 2015 and the 4K version in 2017, Apple has largely been silent on the platform’s future. Despite tvOS receiving continual software updates, the hardware has remained stagnant. Even without modern hardware, the Apple TV is nearly the perfect digital signage device, thanks to Apple’s mobile device management integration.

Apple @ Work: What Apple needs to do next with mobile device management

Apple Enterprise

Apple@Work is brought to you by VMware Workspace ONE, a true Unified Endpoint Management platform that manages all device types on all platforms across all use cases, including macOS and iOS. Try for free

A few weeks ago, I took a look at what I believed Apple would do with FleetSmith long term, and how other MDM vendors shouldn’t be concerned about Apple offering a free solution because 2021 Apple would love a recurring subscription from enterprise customers. I have heard Apple is completely retooling its MDM APIs, and this acquisition may be part of it. So what does Apple needs to do with MDM in the future to better compete with Google Chromebooks in K–12 and Windows in the enterprise? Let’s dive in!

Apple @ Work: An ‘iCloud Backup at Work’ feature for enterprise users would drive more services revenue for Apple

Apple’s rise in the enterprise has come when Microsoft’s dominance on the local network is diminishing. If you could travel back to 2008 and explain to a group of IT professionals that it would be entirely possible to run an IT network without any Microsoft technology, they would have a hard time believing you. For Apple’s next move in the enterprise, I want the company to simplify the restore and migration process. Read on to learn how an iCloud Backup at Work solution would solve key problems for IT leaders while driving services revenue for Apple.

Apple @ Work: Does macOS need Windows virtualization on Apple Silicon to be successful in the enterprise?

Windows M1 Mac

When Apple moved from PowerPC to Intel in 2005, one of the significant changes was the ability to run Windows in a virtualized environment natively. Apple would eventually add the Boot Camp functionality. Still, unless you were running games, using a program like VMware Fusion or Parallels, you could run Windows in a virtualized environment while still running macOS (OS X at the time). With the transition to Apple Silicon, the virtualization story for Windows is a bit messy.

Apple @ Work: MDM vendors shouldn’t fear Apple’s Fleetsmith acquisition

apple enterprise services

As we head into spring, the excitement of summer and WWDC starts to become a reality. Apple’s plans for iOS 15 and macOS 12 are likely being finalized about this time, so it’s the time of year where I began pondering what to expect. While it was big news at the time, we’ve heard almost nothing out of Apple regarding its plans for Fleetsmith after it acquired the company.

Apple @ Work: A $99 low-cost Magic Keyboard would turn the iPad into a sub-$400 laptop

It’s about that time of year when we start thinking about what Apple will release throughout the year hardware and software-wise, so being in education, I naturally start thinking about what I want to see Apple do with the iPad in 2021. The more I think about it, the more I think Apple’s next act with the iPad has nothing to do with the iPad itself. This week, I want to talk about the need for a low-cost Magic Keyboard.
