Apple Park

Apple Park is Apple's new, 175-acre corporate campus. Its 2.8 million-square-foot main building, or "spaceship," is considered to be one of the most energy-efficient buildings on earth. The campus and nearby visitor center opened in 2017, and will house over 12,000 employees.

First announced by Steve Jobs in 2006, Apple kicked off construction on its new 175-acre “Campus 2” in late 2013 and was expected to start moving in more than 12,000 of its employees in April 2017. The campus, located approximately one mile east of its current headquarters in Cupertino, California is also often referred to as the Apple “Spaceship” due to the appearance of the site’s main circular building.

CEO Tim Cook explained why Apple Park’s theater was named after the late Steve Jobs:

To honor his memory and his enduring influence on Apple and the world, the theater at Apple Park will be named the Steve Jobs Theater. Opening later this year, the entrance to the 1,000-seat auditorium is a 20-foot-tall glass cylinder, 165 feet in diameter, supporting a metallic carbon-fiber roof. The Steve Jobs Theater is situated atop a hill — one of the highest points within Apple Park — overlooking meadows and the main building.

Apple Park also houses a visitor center with an exclusive corporate store and mini Caffè Macs. The visitor center opened to public in November 2017.

After three reports of employees walking into glass walls, Apple Park now has stickers to help prevent further injuries

Musk mocks Apple | Aerial photo of Apple Park campus

After Cupertino building official Albert Salvador visited Apple Park last year, he was concerned about employees running into the glass walls that were placed all around the campus as the cafeteria’s doors were indistinguishable from the glass walls, as we reported last month.

After bringing up the issue, a contractor walked right into one of the glass walls, the San Fransisco Chronicle reports.

Some ‘distracted’ Apple employees accidentally walking into Apple Park’s clear glass panes, claims report

Site default logo image

An amusing tidbit this morning highlights a potential flaw in Apple Park’s all-glass design. Bloomberg reports that some employees who might not have been paying 100% attention to where they are walking have accidentally walked into the clear glass internal walls of the pods that make up Apple Park. As a remedy, employees stuck Post-It notes to the walls to make them easier to see. However, these had to be removed because ‘they detracted from the building’s design’.

Whilst there are some markings on these panes, it seems employees haven’t quite adjusted to their new campus. Apple is still in the process of moving employees over to the new campus; at last count, it had permission to move in workers to 5 out of the 12 Apple Park sections.

Latest Apple Park drone footage shows completed outdoor sports courts, bicycles & more

Not long after the city of Cupertino gave Apple permission to move employees into five of the 12 Apple Park sections, the latest drone footage shows that they won’t have any trouble keeping fit.

Among the recently-completed work are the outdoor sports courts, and we can also see bicycles scattered around the campus to provide a convenient and healthy way for staff to move between exterior locations …

Review: Living with Vitra’s Pacific Chair, Jony Ive’s choice for Apple Park

If I asked you to name a few common technology products, office chairs probably wouldn’t make the list. The act of sitting down is such a fundamental human activity that chairs are often overlooked entirely, and rarely thought of as technology. Yet, sitting has quietly become an art in itself. The engineering behind a chair can make or break your productivity and its design can compliment or ruin the appearance of room. Multiply that factor by 12,000 – the number of employees expected to occupy the new Apple Park campus in Cupertino – and suddenly choosing the right chair becomes vital.

With that in mind, upon hearing that Apple – with guidance by Jony Ive – had picked Vitra’s Pacific Chair as the seat of choice for one of the most creative workforces on earth, I knew I had to try one out myself.

Apple employee shuttles are being attacked during work commute to campus

Every day, Apple runs a shuttle service from San Francisco to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino to help employees commute to work. Sadly, some of these buses have been attacked in the last week by unknown criminals resulting in smashed windows. Mashable confirmed with Apple that the incidents were happening but the company did not say how the buses were being damaged; presumably someone is throwing objects (rocks?) to break the glass.
