Apple @ Work: Locus Health is transforming in-home patient care with iPad

Locus Health iPad

I’ve been interested in what Apple is doing in the health industry for a while now. I love reading stories about people using Apple Watch to get healthy, prevent accidents, and more. While I was at JNUC this past week, I got to spend some time with Lindsey Koshansky from Locus Health to hear how they are using the iPad in the healthcare field. They are heavily invested in the Apple and Jamf ecosystem, so I was eager to hear more about what they’re doing.

Apple @ Work: What are configuration profiles in mobile device management?

Apple @ Work is brought to you by Jamf, the standard in Apple management. Learn more at Jamf.com/9to5mac.

Configuration profiles are a huge part of the mobile device management experience when working with the iPad and the Mac. They are the “building blocks” of how the iPad and Mac know what restrictions or settings to have in place. If you can get the hang of this aspect of using an MDM, you’ll become a master in no time. If you are looking for how to restore a deleted Jamf profile in order to remove it, I’ll cover that at the bottom.

In this article, I want to discuss smart groups.

Making The Grade: Use cases for G-Suite login integration on macOS

g-suite on macOS with Jamf

Since last October, I’ve been tracking new login options for macOS through Jamf. Jamf recently launched integration with Microsoft Azure Active Directory, and they just announced that G-Suite is coming as a login option during the macOS setup screen. If you’ll remember, I predicted this feature last fall. Jamf was already making life a lot easier for IT managers, but adding both of these services as identity providers for macOS is a big win. By providing Azure AD and G-Suite login options, having a mobile device management system on the desktop has become as imperative as Jamf on iOS.

G-Suite authentication comes to macOS for K-12 and enterprise customers using Jamf

g-suite jamf on macOS

Back in January, Jamf debuted Microsoft Azure Active Directory login on macOS. It was previously announced in October at JNUC. Since then, I have speculated about the possibility of G-Suite logins coming to macOS. While Microsoft services are very popular, G-Suite is used by 70 million teachers and students.

Today, Jamf has announced that G-Suite is coming to macOS as a unified login option for Jamf Pro customers through Jamf Connect.

Making The Grade: Apple Configurator 1.0 set the groundwork for modern iOS management

iPad in classroom

Deploying and managing iPads and iPhones today is drastically different than how it was a few years ago. Today, it’s a known process. You enroll the devices into Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager, get them enrolled into your mobile device management system, and then you can go from ordering the device directly from Apple straight to handing them out still shrink wrapped. Jamf calls this a zero touch deployment. It wasn’t that long ago that the process was much more complicated than it is today. Let’s take a look back at Apple Configurator 1.0.

Microsoft Azure Active Directory integration with Jamf Connect debuts, unifies cloud identity accounts and macOS devices

Last fall, I wrote about the announcement with Jamf and Microsoft where Microsoft Azure Active Directory would be added as an authentication plugin for macOS developments. I’ve written extensively about the problem of identity management in the enterprise here at 9to5Mac, and this announcement was a breath of fresh air. A decade ago in IT, everything was about Active Directory. It was the first thing you interacted with, and everything was tied to that system. Post iPhone, things got a lot different.

Google LDAP login on macOS? It could be coming soon

Google LDAP login on MacOS

Earlier in October, Google announced Cloud Identity for partners and customers. One of the features of Cloud Identity I was most excited about was the cloud LDAP feature that is part of this service. LDAP is an open source directory protocol that a lot of enterprise services support. Google is heavily investing in its cloud identity service. They expect by 2021, more than 50% of all enterprises will adopt an “all in cloud strategy.” Could Google LDAP login on macOS become a reality in the future?

Red Lion Hotels discusses in-room Apple TV deployment

apple tv in a hotel

As someone who’s spent the past three nights in a hotel room, the hotel TV experience feels stuck in 1998. The TV comes on to a customized hotel user interface with music that is way too loud, and then I have to arrow over to the TV menu to then actually watch TV.  Anytime I use a traditional cable interface, I am reminded of why I cut the cord. It’s tedious to see what’s on, it’s slow to change to what I find, and it’s entirely the opposite of a modern Apple TV-type interface. I’ve often thought all of my complaints could go away if there was an Apple TV in my room. In fact, an Apple TV in a hotel would likely cause me to choose one hotel over another.
