Mac users four times more likely to run latest OS than Windows users

Mac-OS-X-Mavericks-Logo

Some sums done by ComputerWorld show that Mac users are four times more likely to upgrade to the latest available version of the operating system than Windows users.

Microsoft has convinced just 11.6 percent of Windows users who acquired their system since 2001 and still actively use it to go online to migrate to the current edition of its operating system […]

Apple’s convinced 41.6 percent of Mac users who acquired their system since 2001 and still actively use them online to adopt the current edition of the OS.

A large part of it is cost, of course: Mavericks was a free upgrade, and previous upgrades have been priced far more competitively than Windows.

But Apple has also offered a simpler upgrade path, adding features rather than making major changes to the core user-interface. OS X also operates more efficiently, allowing Mavericks to run well on far older hardware than is the case for Windows 8.

To go along with this morning’s third iOS 7 beta, Apple has released OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 3. This new preview arrives two weeks following Preview 2. Like Preview 2, it seems likely that Preview 3 focuses on bug and performance fixes.

OS X Mavericks launches for the general public this fall with new Maps and iBooks apps, significant battery life, scrolling, and overall performance adjustments, and power-user features like revamped multiple-monitor support, Finder Tags, Finder Tabs, and a faster Safari browser.

As readers discover changes in the new Mavericks preview, we will note them below. If you find anything new, you can reach us at tips@9to5mac.com.

The update comes in at 1.08 GB.

OS X 10.9, which is internally codenamed “Cabernet,” will focus on various “power-user” enhancements and take core features from iOS, according to our sources. Unlike operating system updates such as OS X Leopard and OS X Lion, OS X 10.9 will likely not be an overhauled approach to how the operating system feels and functions.

The new operating system includes major enhancements to the Finder application such as tags and tabbed browsing modes. Those additions are notable as many pro-users have relied on third-party solutions and hacks to enable these features. Additionally, the new operating system will include a new Safari web browser with a redesigned backend for improved page loading, speed, and efficiency…

Screen Shot 2013-04-17 at 5.32.36 PM

Following the most recent build just over a week ago, Apple has seeded another build of the upcoming OS X 10.8.4 to registered developers.

The new build comes in at build number 12E33a, and Apple asks developers to, again, focus on Safari, WiFi, and Graphics Drivers.

We previously reported that OS X 10.8.4 has hooks to support faster, 802.11ac WiFi connectivity.

Thanks, D!
