xrOS for Apple’s Reality Pro headset: Apps, features, and more

New 'xrOS' wordmark registered by Apple ahead of AR/VR headset announcement

At WWDC next week, Apple is expected to announce its highly anticipated headset with virtual reality and augmented reality features. Alongside the actual hardware for the so-called “Reality Pro” headset, however, Apple will also announce the product’s underlying software platform. This software will reportedly be called xrOS, and it marks Apple’s first major new software platform since it unveiled watchOS for the Apple Watch.

xrOS will include a number of revolutionary features for the Reality Pro headset, such as immersive media consumption, macOS integration, and more.

Apple’s AR/VR headset is set to be revealed in less than a month at WWDC, yet we still know very little of how this technology will work and what Apple’s use cases will be. Interestingly, this week I got a look at what I’d consider the first applicable workplace augmented reality tech for the masses from Sightful, a company founded by former developers of Apple’s acquired PrimeSense.

I don’t think the timing was a coincidence.

Apple is rumored to introduce its first mixed reality headset next month. And while we’ve heard a lot about this new device, some details remain unclear – like its name and what operating system it will run. After registering the “xrOS” trademark earlier this year, Apple has now registered a wordmark with the same name – which suggests that the new platform will be called “xrOS.”
