Thanks to the transcribers at Seeking Alpha, we have the entire transcript of the call which sent to stock up over 10% in after hours trading. Most interesting is what dear leader Steve Jobs said. Here are some bits:
Hi, everyone. Some remarkable things are happening at Apple but everything is now set against the backdrop of this global economic slowdown, so it seemed like a good time for me to make a few remarks and help answer some of your questions.
As owner of a jailbroken iPhone and very satisfied user of Qik, I have to say that all of you ‘unjailbrokens’ out there are in for a pleasant surprise. According to sometimes on (nano) sometimes off (BluRay), Kevin Rose, the deviant little app is on its way to the App Store. Hopefully they won’t have to cripple it too much to get it on there.
This little app uses your iPhone’s camera to upload live streaming video to Qik’s server where onlookers can watch as live events unfold. Frankly we’re not sure why a Stevenote hasn’t fallen victem to Qik’s eyes yet.
Lost amid the rainbow colors and stainless steel iPod Touches is the fact that all of the new iPods have Audio-in. While this is nifty on a Nano (record notes?), it is downright intriguing for the Touch.
The first thing that obviously comes to mind is the Voice over IP possibilities. Truphone(iTunes link), the Voice over IP application that was originally made for iPhone *should* work for iPod Touch 2G. Cool.
But this leaves a lot more interesting gaming possibilities as well. Specifically, will MMORPG games and such that use audio to communicate incorporate these features?
As I have said before, I believe that this wont be the only nano we see.
* iPhone 2.1 OS. Some new features to bring in line with iPod but motly bug fixes
* Adding to NikePlus, an agreement with 24-Hour Fitness for excer-gaming
* iPod touch with iPhone features..speaker, camera, bluetooth?
* iPod nano with new form factor, more storage, crazy colors
* iTunes 8 music subscription service
* Apple GPS turn by turn directions application
* iPad 720x480tablet
* I've put/see it in the comments
As August nears its end, and September approaches, a few thoughts pop into peoples heads. For some it may be the end of summer, for others the beginning of school. However, for most of the people reading this site, new iPods is the reaction. Undoubtably we will see updates next month: but what exactly will come? Here are my predictions…
1. iPod Shuffle: At 49 dollars, its hard to imagine the price dropping anymore. However, I’m sure we will see some sort of an updated design, definitely thinner, and while a screen is possible, its unlikely. More space, and thinner are what to expect here.
True or false, this year or next, whatever – the rumoured iPhone nano story just won’t go away, and now it looks like at least one third party developer’s working away at products custom-built for such a device.
The Daily Mail this week broke news that Apple plans to introduce a smaller, less well-featured iPhone nano, proposing this would appear in time for Christmas and would be made available to O2’s pay-as-you-go customers.
Naturally, a chorus of derision met this report, with Apple watchers rejecting the whole notion of such a plan – ‘why would Apple want to cannibalise iPhone 3G sales?’, they asked?
Today’s burning question: are Microsoft and Nokia hatching a plan to derail the iPhone’s momentum? And, if a claimed cooperative relationship between the two firms turns out to be true, are reports claiming an imminent iPhone nano reflective of an Apple strategy to deal with this new threat?
We have to grant we’re wandering the hinterlands of rumour and conjecture here, but this morning we learn Microsoft may be working with Nokia to cook up some kind of Zune phone…
As reported, the new plan from market-leading Microsoft involves Nokia building the hardware and Microsoft pimping the device(s) up with Zune-branded entertainment. Electric Pig reports the partners plan an "all-out assault" on Apple and its iPhone.
Remember our report when we explained Apple’s preparing to diversify its iPhone range in order to bring its products within the reach of a wider customer base?
And recall Peter Oppenheimer’s intimations that the company plans to introduce a range of products other competitors can’t match, and that Apple is willing to sacrifice a little margin to make its offering a success?
And, of course, you can’t ignore that AT&T has persuaded Apple to allow it to remain the exclusive iPhone carrier until 2010…(there had to be something more in it for the carrier than just one model, after all…)
Digitimes reports today on the state of falling NAND Flash prices. Specifically, the price of a 16Gbit MLC segment is expected to fall below $5 and continue dropping through the rest of the quarter.
This news has an effect on Apple in a few ways. First, the MacBook Air has a 64Gbyte NAND Flash hard drive option. If Digitimes is to be believed, the 64Gbytes of NAND Flash should cost about $200. Memory controllers and other parts of the drive cost more of course. Keep in mind that SSD Memory uses a high quality NAND memory with more read/writes than standard Flash Memory so prices may not directly correlate. If memory prices are falling across the board, Apple will likely be able to drop its (currently $1000) prices and/or order higher capacity drives (128GByte) in the coming months.
More importantly…
We just got a tip that Apple is planning on dropping the prices again on the iPhone and iPod Touch line within the next month or two – perhaps at the late February event, perhaps as late as mid-April. Our tipster says that Apple will drop the prices by $100.
Also, the 8Gb iPod Touch will be dropped from the lineup according to the source. It might also make sense that the 8Gb iPhone would get phased out as well, but it wasn’t mentioned in the tip. Inventories will likely be a big factor in the timing so we’re keeping an eye out for shortages.
Apple’s move to introduce subsidised iPhones has dashed the hopes of competing companies to deliver a true ‘iPhone-killer’, analysts believe.
Why? Well, competing firms will be required to not only blend advanced software technologies, but to deploy sophisticated hardware components – but Apple’s new low price strategy means competitors will be force to sell their devices at prices that match – or undercut – those of Apple; and that limits their options.
First effect of the new wave was felt today at Synaptics, where the analysts at Oppenheimer have slashed estimates on the company’s stock, driving it to fall $2.72, with the brokerage anticipating shares will fall to under $30 each. Synaptics shares have climbed in hope the company would be able to sell its technologies to Apple competitors.
* iPod Touch – iPhone without the phone bit. Thicker with Hard Drive. Same price
* iPod Nanos that are squarer and gain all the capabilities of the Video iPod. Retain clickwheel
* Shuffles with screens…Picos?
* Wifi and iPhone OS on all ipods
* no form updates. Just bigger hard drives.
