LG launches Apple TV app for its 2019 TVs ahead of 2018 models later this year

LG Apple TV app 2019 models

LG gave an update last month before CES about the Apple TV app arriving this year on its recent TVs. While we learned that the 2020 models would include Apple’s TV app when they launch, LG didn’t share a date for when the 2018 and 2019 models will gain support except for “this year.” This evening LG has announced that the Apple TV app is rolling out now to compatible 2019 models in over 80 countries.

All three 2020 iPhones may be OLED, but ‘two models will have better displays’

All three 2020 iPhones to have OLED but not the same

All three 2020 iPhones are expected to have OLED screens, but that doesn’t mean they will all be equally good. The two flagship models are reportedly getting more advanced display tech which will result in thinner screens.

LG rolling out HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support with update for select 2019 TVs, more to come this fall

AirPlay 2 TV policies can really hurt a brand

After initially slating a July 25 date to enable HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support for some of its 2019 TVs, LG has officially started rolling out software updates for its OLED and NanoCell 4K UHD TVs with ThinQ AI. While the company’s UK press team said last week that 2018 and earlier LG TVs would also be gaining the Apple integration, LG has since said that it has no plans to offer the updates beyond the 2019 models.

LG might not limit HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support to 2019 TVs after all [U]

AirPlay 2 TV policies can really hurt a brand

Update: In a statement to 9to5Mac, LG refutes claims made by its UK PR team:

LG cannot guarantee that TV models prior to 2019 will be able to deliver a seamless user experience. Therefore, while this may be a possibility in the future, at the moment, LG has no plans to update its pre-2019 TVs with Airplay2 or Homekit.

Earlier this week, LG announced that it would start rolling out HomeKit and AirPlay 2 to eligible TVs this month. Now, new details have emerged that suggest those updates won’t be solely limited to 2019 TVs after all.

Second reports suggests Apple plans to drop LCD in next year’s iPhones

While we’re expecting to see three new iPhone models this year, two with OLED screens and a cheaper model using LCD, a new report says that Apple will transition to an all-OLED line-up next year.

Korean report suggests this year’s LCD iPhone will borrow advanced display tech from LG G7 ThinQ

Apple’s 2018 iPhone line-up is widely expected to include a 6-inch/6.1-inch model with a similar design to the iPhone X but using a cheaper LCD display to target a $7-800 price.

Patently Apple speculated a few days ago that Apple might use a new form of LCD technology developed by LG, and a supply-chain report appears to lend weight to this idea …

Apple may be forced to stick with high priced Samsung-made displays for 2018 iPhones

One of the reasons for the $999+ price-tag of the iPhone X is the cost of the Samsung-made OLED screen. The latest estimate is that Samsung charges Apple around $97 per display.

Apple’s negotiating position has been weak, as Samsung has so far been the only company able to make the displays to the iPhone maker’s exacting standards in sufficient volumes. That looked set to change as Apple worked to bring LG on board as a second supplier for this year’s iPhones, but that plan now seems to be in doubt …

A supply-chain report today states that while Samsung will remain the sole or primary supplier of the OLED panels for the smaller model, LG will supply the panels for the 6.5-inch model …
