[Update: ECG app released] Review: Apple Watch Series 4 — beautiful design, invisible features

When people ask me what’s different about the new Apple Watch Series 4, my immediate answer is simply the design. There’s way more to Apple Watch Series 4 than its appearance, but the way it looks is arguably the one difference that anyone can appreciate.

The design isn’t so different that Series 4 feels like something different than the Apple Watch on your wrist though. It’s absolutely the biggest external change to Apple Watch since the original, but I’ve encountered a number of existing Apple Watch users who can’t immediately pinpoint what’s different.

I think that’s partly because the first three Apple Watches pulled off a great illusion: blending a thick black bezel with deep black elements using the OLED display. If you’re very familiar with the actual confines of the previous screen, the new rounded corner-to-corner display feels like a serious breakthrough.

While design is a major advancement on Apple Watch Series 4, it’s the features that you can’t see and may never need that matter the most.

Running with Apple Watch Series 4 and optimizing for long workouts

I ran my second half marathon race on Saturday with Apple Watch, and the overall experience was fantastic — aside from a few quirks. I trained much more ahead of time and applied lessons learned from the experience a year ago. Aside from better training that resulted in shaving nine minutes off my year-ago time, optimizing for battery life on the long run made the biggest difference in improving the experience this year.

Seven new Apple app complications coming soon to Infograph face on Apple Watch Series 4

watchOS 5.1.1 was pushed out earlier today following a spate of bricked Watches last week for some devices updating to watchOS 5.1. However, it looks like this update has also tipped the hat on a few upcoming goodies for Series 4 owners.

With iOS 12.1.1 and watchOS 5.1.1 installed, you can see seven new complications appear in the watch face gallery app for the Infograph and Infograph Modular faces: Home, Mail, Maps, Messages, News, Phone, and Remote …

Apple Watch ECG will be limited by system region settings, can be changed to enable use outside US [Update: Changed at launch]

Apple Watch Series 4 ECG

UPDATE 12/6: With the release of watchOS 5.1.2 and iOS 12.1.1, Apple included a new verification that makes this workaround ineffective. ECG will only be available for models of Apple Watch purchased in the US.

One of the new features of Apple Watch Series 4 is the ability to take an Electrocardiogram of the user’s heart through a series of new sensors on the back of the device and on the revised digital crown. Since this feature requires regulatory approval by health authorities, Apple Watch ECG will roll out to users in the United States first, where Apple was able to get clearance from the FDA.

Apple Watch Series 4 DST bug may not be fixed as clocks roll back in Europe

Apple Watch Series 4

You may not want to use the large Activity complication on the Infograph Modular on Apple Watch Series 4 if you live in a country where the clocks are about to roll back this weekend. That’s because there hasn’t been a software update since the same Daylight Saving Time bug affected users in Australia earlier this month.

Exclusive: Could take years to get Apple Watch ECG feature approved for UK, says regulator [U]

Apple Watch ECG electrocardiogram

(See update at the bottom of the piece.)

If you’re in the UK and were wondering how long it might take before Apple is allowed to enable the ECG feature on the Apple Watch Series 4, the news doesn’t look good.

Apple obtained FDA clearance to use the feature in the US just one day before the launch of the Watch, though Apple has not yet enabled it. But despite a study suggesting an accuracy rate of 98% in detecting AFib, Apple may face a much tougher battle in gaining similar clearance in the UK …

Apple Watch Diary: The Series 4 is definitely a worthwhile upgrade for me

The Apple Watch succeeded in converting me from a smartwatch skeptic to an Apple Watch convert, but I held out on upgrading until the Series 3 came along. There were two reasons that persuaded me to upgrade – improved Siri performance and the automatic monitoring of heart-rate, my Series 0 being the only model in the line-up not to support the latter.

I wrote before the launch of the Series 4 that there were likewise two reasons that would persuade me to upgrade again – and we turned out to get both of them …
