iOS 11

Apple unveiled iOS 11 in June of 2017 during its Worldwide Developer Conference, releasing the first developer beta the same day.

iOS 11 includes a host of new features and interface changes, including a new file system with the Files app, a new Dock for iPad, a redesigned Control Center, drag and drop, ARKit – an augmented reality platform, Apple Pay in Messages, a redesigned App Store, improved Siri, and much more.

Here’s how Apple describes its latest mobile OS:

iOS 11 sets a new standard for what is already the world’s most advanced mobile operating system. It makes iPhone better than before. It makes iPad more capable than ever. And now it opens up both to amazing possibilities for augmented reality in games and apps. With iOS 11, iPhone and iPad are the most powerful, personal, and intelligent devices they’ve ever been.

iOS 11 is currently in developer beta and public beta. The operating system will likely launch to the general public alongside the iPhone 8 this fall.

Final Cut Pro X update coming soon with High Sierra/iOS 11 feature support

Final Cut Pro X users will be happy to hear Apple is planning an update that will arrive before the end of the year that will include support for macOS High Sierra and iOS 11 features.

While we’ve learned the update will include support for “many” of the new features in High Sierra and iOS 11 released to the public last month, perhaps the most notable will be support for H.265 High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) that arrived with iOS 11 and macOS High Sierra…

PSA: You can’t yet edit iOS 11 iPhone video in FCP X, fix likely coming soon

Apple’s ‘just works’ philosophy has hit a snag for those shooting video on an iPhone for editing in Final Cut Pro X: the app doesn’t yet support the new H.265 High Efficiency Video Coding used in iOS 11.

The HEVC codec is, as the name suggests, a far more space-efficient way to compress video, reducing the space needed to store video by as much as 50%. But right now, any HEVC video footage you import into FCP X will be unusable …

PSA: A reminder that toggling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in iOS 11 Control Center disconnects, not disables

We noted way back in July that toggling Bluetooth and Wi-Fi off in the iOS 11 Control Center doesn’t do quite what you might expect. Rather than disabling the functionality, it merely disconnects from currently-connected devices and cancels the auto-join feature to stop it immediately reconnecting.

But not everyone got the memo, so the issue is getting some fresh attention …

iOS 11 fails the detail test, says designer, as he points to inconsistencies

Apple prides itself on its fanatical attention to detail, with many stories of the lengths to which Steve Jobs would go in the pursuit of perfecting even the smallest of UI elements. In one of them, Google’s then VP of engineering Vic Gundotra describes being called by Steve at home on a Sunday.

So Vic, we have an urgent issue, one that I need addressed right away. I’ve already assigned someone from my team to help you, and I hope you can fix this tomorrow. I’ve been looking at the Google logo on the iPhone and I’m not happy with the icon. The second O in Google doesn’t have the right yellow gradient.

Tim Cook and Jony Ive have both said that this legacy means a great deal to them, and that they aim to maintain this obsession with detail. But one designer thinks Apple has missed quite a few details in iOS 11

Apple previewed its new virtual debit card and person-to-person payment feature called Apple Pay Cash back at WWDC in June, but the feature wasn’t present in iOS 11 and watchOS 4 betas over the summer. Apple shared the final version of iOS 11.0 and watchOS 4.0 with testers last week, and Apple Pay Cash was still not enabled. Now Apple has acknowledged the missing feature and shared an update for when we can expect to see it ship.
